This unique piece of art was created from a large salvaged window sash, and an authentic antique roller-style map. The map was one of a set of maps displaying different areas of the world; it is likely that the map was used at one time in a school. The map has a copyright date printed onto it of 1921 (no longer visible - it's covered by the bottom part of the frame). See additional photo link for a photo of the copyright date. This is not a reproduction of a map from 1921, but the actual antique map printed in 1921.
The title & date of the map and company that produced it have been hand painted onto the glass at the top: "Denoyer-Geppert Co., Europe - 1921." Various cities (as they are printed onto the map) have been hand painted onto the glass, including: Glasgow, London, Hamburg, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Madrid, Moscow, Leningrad, and Constantinople. At the bottom left, the scale of the map has been painted onto the glass: "Scale: 1 inch = 75 miles." At bottom right, the map's number has been painted: "Map J2 - Europe."
This is a fascinating piece of history, as many geographical changes have occurred since this map was printed. There are also some hand written notes in pencil on this map (visible only from a close distance).
