This rustic vintage factory cart has been refinished for use as a coffee table. The cart originally came from the Montalbano Furniture Factory in Northlake, IL. The cart was used to shuttle supplies around the factory. The factory still operates today.
When this cart was acquired, it was covered in light green paint. (see before photo - additional photo link below). The cart was disassembled, and the paint was stripped off the wood and metal hardware. The sides of the cart were sanded and clear coated - the result is a natural medium oak tone. The top of the cart was refinished with dark stain for contrast.
All hardware has been cleaned, clear coated, and reattached to the cart. All wood surfaces have been coated with durable polyurethane.
Inspired by the use of these type of carts at old factories - the lettered design was chosen; a defunct typewriter company that operated from 1894-1928. The Oliver Typewriter Co. was based in Chicago, but opened a factory in Woodstock, IL in 1896. The building that housed the company's headquarters is located at 159 N. Dearborn St. in Chicago. It has been declared a Chicago landmark. "The Oliver Typewriter" is inscribed on the ornamentation on the building's facade. The company liquidated it's assets and was sold to a British typewriter company in 1928. The logo painted on this table is not an exact copy of the original, but something that may have been appropriate for it's era.
