This unique coat rack was created from a portion of a vintage storm door, pieces from an old floor lamp, and other vintage hardware. The door was trimmed & stripped of paint - a new grayish-white pickled finish has been applied; the finish allows the wood grain to show through. A section from an old floor lamp was used to fashion a sturdy rail along the bottom edge; the pieces from the lamp were cleaned, cut, and reconfigured for symmetry. Brackets for this new rail were fashioned from the original hinges that came with this door - the hinges were stripped of paint and cleaned. Two additional vintage doorknobs with escutcheon plates have been mounted on either side of the rail for more "hangables." All hardware is silver-pewter toned, with a bit of warm dark brown coloration.
Hang your coats, bags, etc. along the rail using the 8 hooks included with this coat rack; these hooks have a cover of clear plastic tubing on one end, which makes them stationary when hung along the rail (yet, removeable).
The opening in the door, which originally held a window, was fitted with a new mirror - chemically treated to acquire a patina. The painted lettered design was inspired by the overall look & feel of this piece - perhaps something that may have been found at an upscale hotel in old Europe. The Grote Markt in Brussels, Belgium literally means "Grand Place." It is the central market square, where the town hall is located along with many architecturally significant buildings. The "Grote Markt Hotel" is a fictional place where this coat rack may have came from. The address (Rue de la Colline, 173 - 1000 Bruxelles) is also fictional - though Rue de le Colline is a real street located near the Grote Markt.
